Privacy
This site sets no cookies, shows no adverts and doesn’t track you across other websites. It does keep simple visitor statistics, so I can see which posts people read and how they found them.
Visitor statistics
I use Aro, a small analytics service I built and run myself on Cloudflare. For each page view it records the page, the time, the website that linked to it (by name, not full address), your device type and browser family, and your country and city as estimated from your IP address.
To count unique visitors without cookies, Aro combines your IP address and browser details with a random value that changes every day, and keeps only a one-way hash of the result. It never stores your IP address, and codes from different days can’t be linked to each other. At the end of each day, the individual page views and visitor codes are combined into daily totals and deleted. The totals contain counts only and are kept in the European Union for as long as the site uses Aro. Aro’s privacy notice has the full detail.
My basis for this is legitimate interest: understanding, in aggregate, how the site is used. Because the data can’t identify you, I can’t find or delete records relating to a particular person.
Hosting
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors’ IP addresses for security and operational reasons, under GitHub’s privacy statement. I don’t have access to those logs.
